Ireland’s R&D tax credit scheme offers a 30% credit on qualifying expenditure, making it one of the most attractive incentives for companies investing in innovation. The credit applies to activities that involve resolving scientific or technological uncertainty, and eligible costs can include staff time, materials, cloud computing and certain subcontractor or capital costs.
Key Deadlines
For companies with a 31 December 2024 year-end, the important dates are:
Claim deadline: 31 December 2025
Pre-Filing Notification (PFN): 30 September 2025 (assuming not all accountants will work NYE!)
The PFN requirement applies to first-time claimants and to companies that have not claimed in the previous three years. It must be submitted at least 90 days before filing the claim, through MyEnquiries in ROS. Missing this step will invalidate the entire claim, even if it is otherwise prepared and filed on time.
Why It Matters
The increase in the rate from 25% to 30% has made the R&D tax credit more valuable, but the PFN introduces an additional compliance hurdle. For many companies, particularly first-time claimants, early preparation is essential to avoid missing out.
Summary
R&D tax credits are now worth 30% of qualifying spend.
Claims must be filed within 12 months of the year-end.
Companies with a 31 December 2024 year-end must submit a PFN by 30 September
2025 if they have not claimed in the past three years.
Missing the PFN deadline means the claim cannot be made.
